Niche Construction
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Organisms do not merely passively adapt to their environment; they also actively modify it (e.g., beavers building dams, earthworms aerating soil), thereby changing the selection pressures on themselves and their offspring. Evolution is a mutual construction between organisms and their environment.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Actively change the track. Don't just ask "Am I suited to this environment?" but "How can I modify this environment to suit me?" The truly strong do not win by competing within existing rules but by establishing advantages through modifying environmental rules (e.g., defining new standards).
Anchor fast decisions
Niche construction refers to the process by which organisms actively modify their environment through their own activities, which in turn affects the selection pressures on themselves and others, forming a bidirectional feedback loop between environment and genes. Proposed by Odling-Smee et al.
