Regulatory Focus Theory
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Human motivation systems are divided into two types: promotion focus (concerned with gains, advancement, ideals, sensitive to missed opportunities) and prevention focus (concerned with safety, responsibility, avoiding harm, sensitive to mistakes).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
The underlying logic of person-job fit. Putting a promotion-focused person in risk control or finance would drive them crazy; putting a prevention-focused person in from-zero-to-one pioneering would break them. To motivate the former, talk about "stars and seas"; to motivate the latter, talk about "flawless safety".
Anchor fast decisions
Promotion focus is concerned with ideals and gains (sensitive to missed opportunities), while prevention focus is concerned with responsibility and safety (sensitive to mistakes); the two drive different strategies and preferences.
