Transfer Function
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A function that mathematically describes the relationship between the input and output of a system. That is: output = input × transfer function. It defines how the system processes, amplifies, or delays the input signal.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Model the transformation capability of a system. If your effort (input) is large but the result (output) is small, your 'transfer function' gain is too low. Don't just focus on the input (I worked hard) or the output (the result is poor); instead, fix the black box in between (methodology/tools).
Anchor fast decisions
In the Laplace domain, the system output Y(s) = G(s)X(s), where G is the transfer function, characterizing the system's gain, phase, and dynamics (including delay and inertia); it determines 'how input becomes output'.
