CORE DEFINITION

When driving for a long time on a monotonous road, the driver enters a trance-like state: eyes on the road, hands operating, but the brain is completely unaware of driving, with no memory of the scenery passed. This is an automated dissociative state.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

Be wary of skilled unconsciousness. When engaged in repetitive work (such as assembly lines, long-married life), we are prone to enter 'highway hypnosis'. Although we can keep functioning, if a sudden event (black swan) occurs, our reaction ability is zero. We must artificially set up roadblocks (rituals) to break the hypnosis.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

'Highway hypnosis' refers to a semi-hypnotic state entered when driving automatically on a monotonous road for a long time: the body is still operating safely, but consciousness is 'offline', and memory of the road section afterwards is vague. It is the result of automation taking over and attention saturation.
