Chemotaxis
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Cells or bacteria sense the concentration gradient of chemicals in their environment and automatically swim toward higher concentrations (food) or away from higher concentrations (toxins). They cannot see the whole picture, only perceive local concentration differences.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Describes blind incentive following. Most people's career paths are not based on strategic planning, but manifest as "money-seeking" or "fame-seeking" — blindly swimming toward areas with higher local incentives (salary, likes), even if that direction leads to a trap.
Anchor fast decisions
Chemotaxis is the directed movement of organisms along chemical concentration gradients: toward attractants (positive) or away from repellents (negative). Bacteria, immune cells, and sperm use this to locate resources or targets.
