Rule 30
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A one-dimensional cellular automaton rule where each cell evolves according to a fixed rule based on its own state and those of its left and right neighbors. From simple rules, extremely complex, seemingly random patterns can spontaneously emerge.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Reveals how simple rules generate complex order. Many seemingly chaotic phenomena (such as stock market fluctuations, social movements) may simply be the result of iterating underlying simple rules. In management, rather than pursuing complex top-level design, it is better to design a few simple, iterable rules and let complexity emerge naturally.
Anchor fast decisions
Rule 30 is Wolfram's one-dimensional cellular automaton that produces seemingly random complex patterns from a single black cell, challenging the intuition that simple rules lead to simple outcomes.
