CORE DEFINITION

It is hypothesized that the degree of environmental degradation has an inverted U-shaped relationship with economic development. In the early stages of economic development, the environment deteriorates as income increases; but when income exceeds a certain threshold, environmental quality improves with economic growth due to technological progress and shifts in demand.
