Zone of Proximal Development
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A concept proposed by Lev Vygotsky: the gap between a learner's actual developmental level as determined by independent problem-solving and the potential developmental level as determined through problem-solving under adult guidance or in collaboration with more capable peers. This zone represents the level of development that the learner can achieve with appropriate help.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Instructional support design. In personalized instruction, competency development, and skill acquisition, understanding how to provide just the right amount of support. Helps us optimize teaching effectiveness and promote effective learning by identifying the learner's zone of proximal development, providing gradually withdrawn scaffolding, and matching appropriate challenge levels.
Anchor fast decisions
Vygotsky proposed that the region between what a student can solve independently and what they can solve with guidance is the zone of proximal development. The mechanism is to use scaffolding to turn potential levels into actual levels.
