Technology Readiness Level - TRL
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A standard developed by NASA that divides technology from 'discovery of basic principles' to 'actual system verification' into 1-9 levels. TRL 1 is theoretical, TRL 9 is battle-tested.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Innovation coordinate system. When investing in or evaluating new technology, use TRL to pour cold water. Distinguish between 'feasible in the lab' (TRL 3-4) and 'usable in engineering' (TRL 8-9). Between these two lies the huge 'valley of death'.
Anchor fast decisions
Technology must cross multiple risk steps from principle to mass production. TRL uses a unified scale to calibrate key verification points at each stage, enabling investors to objectively compare the real distance between 'idea' and 'usable'.
