Derived from the biblical Book of Judges, it originally referred to a word used by the Gileadites to identify the Ephraimites (who could not pronounce "sh" correctly). Now it generally refers to any distinctive mark, phrase, or behavior that can be used to identify membership in a particular group, often used to distinguish "insiders" from "outsiders."
