5 Whys
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
By continuously asking "why" five times, delve deeper layer by layer to find the root cause of the problem, rather than staying at the surface symptoms. Scaffold role: root cause digger. It prevents you from "treating the head when the head hurts, and treating the foot when the foot hurts." For example, the machine stopped because the fuse blew; the fuse blew because the bearing was insufficiently lubricated; the bearing was insufficiently lubricated because the lubrication pump was broken... until you find a controllable root cause.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Root cause digger.
Anchor fast decisions
Based on "causal chain" and "symptoms vs. root cause." Behind every surface cause lies a deeper trigger; continuous questioning breaks the "treating symptoms" cycle and locates the controllable systemic root cause.
