Value Proposition Canvas

INTRODUCTION

CORE DEFINITION
Developed by Alexander Osterwalder as a companion to the Business Model Canvas, the Value Proposition Canvas has two sides. The customer side captures jobs to be done, pains, and gains. The product side captures products and services, pain relievers, and gain creators. Value appears only where the two sides fit, so the canvas turns product-market fit into something that can be drawn, inspected, and revised.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Fit test: force the question of which job the customer hires your product to do. - False-need filter: expose features that relieve pains no customer actually has. - Gap mapping: compare each product element against a specific customer job, pain, or gain.
Anchor fast decisions
Products fail when teams reason outward from their own features instead of inward from customer jobs. Separating the two sides makes the mismatch visible: an empty cell opposite a real customer pain marks a gap, while a feature with no corresponding job marks waste. Iterating on visible gaps replaces guesswork with a checkable comparison.
