Freemium Business Model

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
A revenue model in which a company offers a permanently free tier with real utility and charges for advanced features, capacity, or an ad-free experience. The term was coined by venture capitalist Fred Wilson by combining free and premium. The model depends on three quantities: the cost of serving free users, the conversion rate to paid, and the lifetime value of a paying customer relative to acquisition cost. Its structural constraint is that the free tier must be valuable enough to spread but limited enough that a meaningful share of users need to upgrade. The economics close only when paid revenue covers the full free-user load.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Tier Boundary Design: decide exactly which capability stays free and which requires payment. - Funnel Arithmetic: check whether conversion rate times lifetime value covers the cost of every free user. - Value Gap Sizing: test whether the distance between free and paid is big enough to motivate upgrading.
Anchor fast decisions
Free access removes the two biggest adoption frictions, price and commitment, so the product spreads through the user base at near-zero marginal marketing cost. That pool then becomes the acquisition channel for the paid tier, which means the free tier functions as a marketing expense carried by the product rather than by the balance sheet. The model closes only when the free tier is deliberately incomplete: if it satisfies everyone, conversion approaches zero, and if it satisfies no one, adoption never starts. The design problem is calibrating that incompleteness.
