Decision Tree
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A method that visually presents the decision-making process and its possible consequences (including chance event outcomes, resource costs, and utility) in a tree diagram. It includes decision nodes, chance nodes, and terminal nodes.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Path deduction. Transforms complex non-linear thinking into visual linear logic. It forces the thinker to quantify the probability and payoff of each branch, making it the best tool for calculating 'expected value'.
Anchor fast decisions
Uses a tree diagram to represent decision nodes (controllable), chance nodes (probabilistic events), and terminal nodes (payoffs). Along the branches, calculate the expected value (probability × payoff) and choose the path with the optimal expected value. The mechanism is 'structured expected value maximization'.
