Category Creation

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
Category creation is the practice of introducing a new market category and owning it, as Red Bull did with energy drinks and the Kindle did with e-readers. Instead of improving on the leader's terms, the firm names a new problem space and educates the market about it. Buyers then face a prior question, whether they want this category at all, and the creator is the default answer to it.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Naming as Strategy: choose the category name before choosing the brand message. - Escape the Ranking: move the contest from who is better to whether this is needed at all. - Market Education: plan how you will teach buyers that the category exists.
Anchor fast decisions
Buyers navigate markets through categories, and the first credible member of a new category becomes the reference point against which others are judged. Because the comparison set is empty at the start, the creator avoids a head-to-head fight with an entrenched leader and captures the position of default choice.
