Dimensional Analysis
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
When solving physics or engineering problems, instead of looking at specific numbers, check whether the physical dimensions (such as length L, time T, mass M) match. If the left side of the equation is velocity (L/T) and the right side is acceleration (L/T²), then the formula must be wrong.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Type checking. When thinking about business or life problems, check whether the 'dimensions' match. For example, is it dimensionally consistent to trade 'time cost' for 'monetary gain'? If he is talking about 'efficiency' (speed) and you are talking about 'effectiveness' (direction), your discussion is invalid communication with mismatched dimensions.
Anchor fast decisions
Dimensional analysis relies on the consistency of physical quantities' dimensions to test formulas, derive relationships, and simplify variables (such as the Buckingham π theorem), using minimal experiments to determine laws.
