Müllerian Mimicry
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-28
CORE DEFINITION
Müllerian mimicry is a type of biological mimicry in which two or more well-defended species, often foul-tasting and sharing common predators, converge in appearance to mimic each other's honest warning signals. This convergence of appearance achieves the following benefit to species that undergo it: predators need only experience a single unpleasant encounter with any member of a set of Müllerian mimics to learn to avoid the entire set, reducing the cost of education for each species.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Müllerian mimicry is a type of biological mimicry in which two or more well-defended species, often foul-tasting and sharing common predators, converge in appearance to mimic each other's honest warning signals.
Anchor fast decisions
Two harmful species evolve the same warning coloration, so that a predator that learns from one encounter will avoid both, sharing the 'education cost' and benefiting both. This is an alliance of honest signals, distinct from the deception of Batesian mimicry.
