Holism
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Systems have emergent properties that the parts do not possess, and cannot be understood solely by decomposition.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Observe emergence. When reductionism fails (e.g., explaining consciousness, life, team morale), one must look at the whole. Do not focus only on the parts, but on the relationships between them. Relationships create value that the parts do not have.
Anchor fast decisions
The whole is greater than and irreducible to the sum of its parts; understanding a system requires looking at relationships and organization, not just elements. It is opposed to reductionism.
