Stackelberg Competition
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A leader-follower game model. Unlike the Cournot model (simultaneous moves), here a leader acts first, and the follower acts after observing the leader's action. The leader exploits the first-mover advantage by considering the follower's reaction function to determine the optimal output.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Market position strategy. Guides firms to choose strategies based on their position. If you are an industry giant (leader), you should use capacity commitment to squeeze competitors; if you are a small firm (follower), your best strategy is usually to optimize against the giant's decisions rather than blindly confront.
Anchor fast decisions
In an oligopoly, the leader sets output/price first, and the follower responds subsequently, forming a sequential game equilibrium where the leader often has an advantage. It is a first-mover advantage in quantity leadership.
