Environmental Storytelling
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-31
CORE DEFINITION
Telling the story of what happened through the placement of objects, traces, and corpse positions in a scene, rather than through dialogue or narration. (For example: a fallen chair, bullet holes in the wall, and a half-cup of warm coffee).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Teaching without words. Don't write 'a fierce fight happened here.' Describe the 'broken picture frame' and 'scattered shell casings.' Let the reader reconstruct the scene like a detective.
Anchor fast decisions
Telling the story through the scene and objects themselves, rather than through direct narration. The mechanism is indirect storytelling (show, don't tell).
