Cheap Talk
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-31
CORE DEFINITION
Communication between game players before actual decision-making, which is costless and non-binding (i.e., talk is cheap). Although seemingly useless, it can significantly influence outcomes in coordination games.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Information filtering. It reminds us to distinguish between 'costly signals' (such as education, deposits, performance bonds) and 'costless signals' (verbal promises, visions) in negotiations and analysis. The former are usually more credible, while the latter require specific game structures to be effective.
Anchor fast decisions
Cheap talk refers to verbal communication that does not affect the payoff of the game and is non-binding. Since it cannot be enforced, whether it can influence the equilibrium depends on whether the speaker has credible incentives to tell the truth. It is commonly used in coordination and signaling research.
