CORE DEFINITION

After writing the first draft, rather than before, write a one-sentence summary for each paragraph in the margin. By examining the order of these summaries, you can judge whether the logical flow of the article is smooth and whether the structure is redundant.

Structural reorganization. When you feel the article is 'messy' but don't know where the problem is, don't revise in place. Extract a reverse outline and you will immediately see: 'Why does this paragraph discuss A, the next jumps to C, and the one after that returns to A?'
