CORE DEFINITION

Memory is not just storing information itself, but also storing the contextual cues (environment, mood) at the time of encoding. The more the retrieval context matches the encoding context, the easier the recall.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

Context reinstatement. If you can't remember something in an exam, try closing your eyes and recalling the room, lighting, or even your mood during review. When studying, try to do so in an environment similar to the application scenario (e.g., mock exams) to improve retrieval.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Memory retrieval depends on the match between retrieval cues and the encoding context, i.e., context dependency.
