Telegraphing

INTRODUCTION

CORE DEFINITION
Telegraphing is the practice of signalling a coming event so plainly that the audience anticipates it, destroying surprise. In fiction it means a planted detail so conspicuous that the reader already knows the gun will be used; in negotiation, competition, and strategy it means revealing intent before acting, letting the other side prepare. The constraint is that some visibility is unavoidable and even useful: the craft lies in controlling which signals are legible rather than eliminating all of them.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Suspense Calibration: hide setups inside ordinary action so they read as setups only in retrospect. - Intent Secrecy: check what your preparation reveals before you commit to a move. - Signal Audit: list what your routine behaviour broadcasts to anyone who is watching.
Anchor fast decisions
Attention goes to whatever stands out against the surrounding baseline. A setup that is marked as important breaks the baseline and gets filed away as a prediction. Embedding the same information inside an unrelated action keeps it below the threshold, so it is stored without being flagged and surfaces only when the payoff makes it meaningful.
