Deep Play
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-31
CORE DEFINITION
A game with stakes so high that it is completely irrational from a rational perspective (such as Balinese cockfighting, where one stakes their entire fortune and reputation). People play it not to win money, but to express status, identity, and worldview.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Irrational investment: understanding why someone would queue overnight for a limited-edition sneaker, or argue for three days and nights over an online point. Because they are playing 'deep play', where the stakes are their beliefs and dignity.
Anchor fast decisions
Geertz proposed: refers to games/rituals (such as Balinese cockfighting) where the stakes are so high that they exceed any rational material return, yet participants remain deeply involved; their significance lies in performing identity, status, and cultural symbols, rather than winning or losing itself.
