Transitional Object
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The first 'not-me' object chosen by a child (such as a worn-out blanket or teddy bear). It is neither entirely subjective fantasy nor entirely objective reality, but lies in an intermediate area. It helps the child resist separation anxiety and establish a connection with the external world.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Dependency transfer: Adults also have transitional objects (e.g., phones, cigarettes, work badges). Understand that these items are psychological crutches for people's sense of security; do not forcibly take them away.
Anchor fast decisions
The child uses an intermediate object that is 'neither me nor not-me' to move from absolute dependence to independence, alleviating separation anxiety.
