CORE DEFINITION
When a person receives two contradictory commands and cannot escape the situation, they may fall into schizophrenia-like anxiety. For example, a mother says: "You should take the initiative to love me (if you love me because I ordered you, it's not love; if you don't take the initiative, it means you don't love me)."

- Management taboo: The boss says "Be creative, but don't make mistakes." This is a double bind. It can drive employees crazy or turn them into mediocrities. One constraint must be lifted (e.g., "Dare to try and err, small mistakes are not punished").

Bateson et al. proposed that an individual (especially in family communication) falls into a situation where "no matter what, they are wrong"—two contradictory and inescapable commands, which cannot be commented on, are imposed simultaneously, and long-term exposure can lead to severe psychological consequences.
