Three Yin and Three Yang

CORE DEFINITION
Three yin and three yang is the Chinese medicine scheme that encodes yin and yang as quantities rather than as a binary. On the yang side, Taiyang is the greatest, Yangming the middle and Shaoyang the least; on the yin side, Taiyin is the greatest, Shaoyin the middle and Jueyin the least. The six levels also describe opening, closing and pivoting. Six-channel differentiation locates where a condition has stalled on that scale and treats it by shifting the level back toward normal flow.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Level grading: Ask which of the six levels the abnormality currently sits on. - Direction check: Determine whether the condition is moving outward toward yang or inward toward yin. - Adjustment target: Choose the intervention that returns the level to normal rather than suppressing the symptom.
Anchor fast decisions
Replacing a yes-or-no distinction with a graded scale gives the practitioner a coordinate rather than a label, so a condition can be tracked as it moves between levels instead of merely being classified. Because each level corresponds to a distinct pattern of resistance and reserve, matching the level determines which formula restores flow. Disease becomes a displacement on the scale, and treatment becomes repositioning.
