Percolation Theory
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Describes the process of fluid permeating through a porous medium. When the probability (or density) of connections exceeds a certain critical threshold (Percolation Threshold), tiny local connections suddenly link into a giant network (giant component) covering the whole system, causing a sudden change in system properties (e.g., from insulator to conductor). -
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
The critical point for propagation and explosion. - This explains how rumors, viruses, or innovations 'explode'. When network density is low, propagation is local; once connectivity exceeds the threshold, propagation instantly covers the entire network. For community operations or epidemic prevention, the core is to control this 'connection threshold'.
Anchor fast decisions
Percolation: On a random lattice/network, nodes or edges exist with probability p, and we study when connected clusters form a spanning path across the system; at the critical probability pc (percolation threshold), the system abruptly changes from 'isolated' to 'conducting'.
