Subtext
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
What people say (the text) and what they think (the subtext) are often inconsistent. Good dialogue is two people talking about the present moment, but the reader can hear them discussing past grievances or future desires.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Reject directness. Don't have characters say "I love you" or "I hate you" directly. Have them talk about the weather, dinner, or fixing the plumbing, but let the reader read love or hate between the lines of tone.
Anchor fast decisions
The implicit intent, emotion, or stance beneath the surface meaning of words, carried by context, relationships, and unstated premises; reading subtext is key to communication and social reasoning.
