CORE DEFINITION

The degree to which a person feels connected between their present self and future self. The stronger the connection, the more willing the person is to save, exercise, and delay gratification for the future.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

Counteracting short-sightedness. If you feel that your older self is a stranger, you will overdraw your health. By writing letters to your future self or using aging filters, you can enhance this continuity and improve self-discipline.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

A psychological construct: the degree to which an individual psychologically perceives the 'future self' and the 'present self' as a continuous entity. The stronger the continuity, the more willing the individual is to sacrifice the present for the future. The mechanism is the connection of temporal self.
