Computational Irreducibility
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
For certain complex systems (such as weather, biological evolution, complex AI), there is no simplified formula that can 'skip' the computational process and directly predict the outcome. To know what will happen in the future, the only way is to run the entire process step by step. -
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
The physical limit of prediction. - It shatters the deterministic fantasy of 'Laplace's demon'. Why can't we perfectly predict the emergence of AI? Why can't we calculate our entire life? Because life is irreducible. There is no shortcut; you must live it yourself to know the answer. The process itself is the result.
Anchor fast decisions
Although the evolution rules of certain systems are simple, their future states cannot be computed by a shortcut shorter than 'running the rules step by step'. Information is gradually 'computed' during the process, with no closed-form solution to skip ahead.
