Double-Blind Trial
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
In an experiment, subjects do not know whether they are taking a drug or a sugar pill, and doctors do not know whether they are administering the drug or the placebo. Only a third party holds the code.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Bias elimination: The placebo effect and observer bias in humans are too strong. Any therapy or strategy claiming to be 'effective' without undergoing double-blind testing may be a psychological effect.
Anchor fast decisions
In evaluation, neither the subject nor the administrator knows the identity/condition of the tested object, suppressing the distortion of rater expectations and subject performance by identity cues, commonly used in sensory and product evaluations.
