World-Systems Theory
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The world is not composed of isolated states, but a core-semiperiphery-periphery division of labor system. Core states (wealthy) exploit peripheral states (poor, providing raw materials/labor) through unequal exchange.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Positioning: When analyzing international situations or industrial chains, see clearly who in the "core" is eating meat (design/brand/finance), and who in the "periphery" is drinking soup (OEM/resources). Personal development should also strive to move toward core industries.
Anchor fast decisions
The capitalist world-economy exhibits a hierarchical division of labor: the core occupies high value-added activities (design/brand/finance), the periphery provides low value-added activities (OEM/raw materials), and the semi-periphery is in between and acts as a buffer. Unequal exchange causes value to flow net from the periphery to the core, maintaining structural inequality. Application: Recognize your position in the industrial chain (core/periphery) to formulate strategies to "move toward the core" or "avoid being locked in."
