Three Shells to Restore Pulse

INTRODUCTION

CORE DEFINITION
A formula from the warm-disease tradition, associated with Wu Jutong and the systematisation of triple-burner pattern diagnosis in the Qing dynasty. In the late stage of a warm disease, true yin is exhausted and deficiency wind stirs internally, showing as fine trembling of the fingers. Three shell drugs, oyster shell, soft-shelled turtle shell and tortoise shell, all heavy and deeply yin in nature, are used to nourish yin and subdue floating yang. Plant drugs are held to be too light to gather it, and the pattern must be confirmed before the shells are used.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Ballast the Surface: when the base is hollow and the top flickers, weight it down with something heavy - Stabilise Then Rebuild: restore order with a firm measure first, then refill the foundation beneath it - Match Weight to Disorder: use light remedies for light drift and heavy ones for what will not settle
Anchor fast decisions
When the yin foundation is exhausted, the yang that normally rests on it loses its anchor and drifts upward, producing restlessness, agitation and tremor. Light dispersing remedies cannot gather it because they lack weight, so the disturbance continues. Heavy substances drawn from deep water supply the mass needed to pull the disorder back down, restoring order before the underlying resource is replenished. Stabilisation and refilling are separate jobs, and doing only the first leaves the same collapse available later.
