Technical Debt Quadrant
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Classifies technical debt into four categories based on 'deliberate/accidental' and 'reckless/prudent'. The most common is 'prudent and deliberate' debt (intentionally writing poor code to meet deadlines, but with a plan to repay).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Classify and manage debt. Not all technical debt is bad. If you are aware of borrowing and have a repayment plan (prudent and deliberate), it is leveraging; if it is bad code due to ignorance (accidental and reckless), it is a disaster.
Anchor fast decisions
The two dimensions of 'intent' and 'prudence' intersect to produce four quadrants. Prudent and deliberate debt is controllable leverage, while accidental and reckless debt is uncontrolled risk. Classification allows teams to treat different types differently rather than one-size-fits-all.
