Happy Path
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The ideal flow for users to complete a task without any errors, exceptions, or unexpected situations. This is the most easily conceived part of design and the least demanding of skill.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Be wary of idealized design. Novice designers only design the Happy Path, while experts focus on designing the 'Sad Path' (exception flows). The true quality of experience depends on how the system guides users when errors occur (e.g., network disconnection, input errors).
Anchor fast decisions
Happy path (main flow): the ideal sequence of steps in system design or user journey that assumes everything goes smoothly without exceptions; it is the backbone of requirements and testing, but only covers normal conditions and needs to be complemented with exception paths to be complete.
