Mary Sue
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Refers to an overly idealized original character in fan fiction. Usually a perfect projection of the author, with super abilities, loved by all, and without flaws, causing the plot logic to collapse and revolve entirely around her.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Avoid narcissistic narratives. In personal branding or workplace presentations, be wary of portraying yourself as a "Mary Sue." A real, flawed, and overcoming-difficulties "hero's journey" is more compelling than a perfect "Mary Sue."
Anchor fast decisions
Refers to an idealized character who is unrealistically perfect and embodies the author's narcissism. The mechanism is the author's self-insertion.
