Shouganai
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-31
CORE DEFINITION
Literally meaning 'it cannot be helped'. It refers to a philosophy of accepting uncontrollable circumstances, not wasting emotions on things that cannot be changed, and quickly adjusting one's mindset to continue living. Similar to Stoic acceptance.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Stop emotional drain. When encountering earthquakes, delays, or irreversible failures, saying 'Shouganai' is not passive resignation, but to save energy and focus on what can be done next.
Anchor fast decisions
Emotions and energy are limited; continuously ruminating over irreversible events (natural disasters, established failures) does not improve outcomes, only consumes resources. Accepting 'cannot be changed' and stopping internal friction is the prerequisite for redirecting energy toward 'changeable things'. Similar to the Stoic 'dichotomy of control'.
