Purple Cow
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
In an era of product saturation, black-and-white cows (mediocre products) are no longer noticed. To succeed, you must be a purple cow (remarkable, extraordinary, astonishing, worth talking about).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Mediocrity is fatal: Don't try to make a product that is "slightly better"; it will be drowned out. Instead, make a product that is "extremely different" in some dimension. Safety is risk; standing out is safety.
Anchor fast decisions
Seth Godin proposed that in an era of information overload and product homogenization, "remarkability" itself becomes a scarce resource. Mediocrity (black-and-white cows) is ignored; only products that are extremely distinctive and "outstanding" in some dimension are talked about and spread, forming word-of-mouth virality.
