CORE DEFINITION

The best time to persuade is not when making the request, but before making it. By arranging the environment and using language to guide, you change the other person's focus of attention, making them more likely to agree to your request later.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

- The art of priming: If you want to sell expensive red wine, first ask the other person, "Do you consider yourself a person of refined taste?" (pre-implanting identity). If you want your boss to approve a budget, first let them recall a successful investment.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Robert Cialdini proposed that the most critical moment of persuasion is "before" making the request. By pre-guiding the other person's focus of attention and mental state, you put them in a state more receptive to subsequent information.
