Das Man / The They
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
In our daily lives, we often exist not as 'ourselves' but as 'the They'. We listen to the music that 'everyone' listens to, and read the books that 'everyone' reads. In this state, the authentic self is submerged.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Unconcealment: Be wary of moments when 'everyone does this'. Those are moments when you lose your sense of existence. Heed the call of conscience, extricate yourself from 'the They', and face your authentic self.
Anchor fast decisions
In 'Being and Time', Heidegger uses 'das Man' (the They) to refer to the anonymous average state in which everyday Dasein is absorbed: everyone is like this, no one is responsible, and the individual is taken over by public opinion that dictates 'do as others do'.
