CORE DEFINITION

In addition to the well-known 'fight or flight' response, humans (especially women) have another stress response mechanism: tending (protecting offspring) and befriending (seeking social support). This is mediated by oxytocin.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

- A new way to reduce stress: When stressed, you don't have to go to the gym to punch (Fight) or escape (Flight); try helping others, petting a cat, or confiding in friends (Tend & Befriend), which can more effectively lower stress hormones.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

In negotiation/consultation/therapy, combining 'tending' (showing concern for the other party's interests and emotions) with 'befriending' (building a sense of shared goals) can reduce confrontation and enhance cooperation and compliance.
