CORE DEFINITION
Proposed by Zhu Danxi, a renowned physician of the Jin-Yuan period. Many diseases arise from depression (yu). It includes: qi depression, blood depression, fire depression, dampness depression, phlegm depression, and food depression. Qi depression is the initiator.

Domino effect. Diseases often manifest as a chain reaction. Low mood (qi depression) -> indigestion (food/dampness depression) -> phlegm generation (phlegm depression) -> heat transformation (fire depression) -> blood stasis (blood depression). Treatment should target the first domino (usually qi depression).
Anchor fast decisions
Zhu Danxi described six types of depression causing disease: qi, blood, phlegm, fire, dampness, and food. Among them, 'qi depression' is the precursor of all others; prolonged depression transforms into fire, generates phlegm, and obstructs food.
