Shit Sandwich
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A technique for delivering negative feedback. Start with a compliment (bread), insert the criticism (meat/shit) in the middle, and end with encouragement or affirmation (bread). It aims to reduce the other person's defensiveness.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Soften conflict. Although criticized as 'hypocritical', it remains an effective buffering structure when dealing with fragile self-esteem or difficult conversations, ensuring the criticism is heard.
Anchor fast decisions
Same origin as the 'sandwich feedback method': criticism triggers self-defense and closes the reception channel; wrapping negative information with positive information maintains the other's self-esteem and sense of security, making the criticism be seen as 'suggestions for improvement' rather than 'denial of personality'. Its essence is to regulate the emotional temperature of the conversation.
