CORE DEFINITION
Derived from an architectural metaphor (the triangular area between a dome and a square base). It refers to biological features that did not evolve for a specific function but are by-products of other evolutionary changes. For example, the shape of the human chin may have no function; it is merely a structural remnant after teeth became smaller.

- Anti-teleology: Not everything that exists has a 'purpose'. Some strange processes in a company may be zombie regulations (spandrels) left over from solving a temporary problem (the main structure) in the past.
Anchor fast decisions
A spandrel refers to a by-product forced to exist to support other structures, not evolved for a function, yet mistakenly considered an adaptation. Gould used this to remind us not to treat every feature as an adaptive design.
