Lung-Large Intestine Pair
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The lung (zang/upper) and large intestine (fu/lower) are connected through meridians. When lung qi descends, the large intestine is unobstructed; when the large intestine is unobstructed, lung qi descends.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Piston effect. The lung is the plunger of a syringe, and the large intestine is the needle. If the plunger cannot be pushed down (constipation), it may be that the needle is blocked; if the needle does not produce water, it may be that the plunger is not exerting force (lung qi deficiency). To treat asthma (lung), often unblock the large intestine; to treat constipation, often raise lung qi.
Anchor fast decisions
The lung and large intestine are connected by meridians and share qi movement: lung qi descending helps the large intestine transmit, and the large intestine being unobstructed helps lung qi descend. The exterior-interior and upper-lower form a 'piston' linkage, where stagnation in one affects the other.
