Digital data gradually corrupts or becomes unreadable over time due to physical decay of storage media or obsolescence of software environments. Digital is not eternal.

Maintain digital assets. Don't assume that storing photos on a hard drive is enough. You must regularly power on, migrate data, and convert formats. Any asset (knowledge, relationships, code) that is not actively maintained will suffer Bit Rot.

Bit rot falls into two categories: physical layer decay (hard drive magnetic degradation, optical disc oxidation) causing bit flips; and logical layer obsolescence (software, formats, encoding standards deprecated) making data intact but unreadable. Without active maintenance, any digital asset will degrade over time.
