Shivering Sweat
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
During the course of warm-heat disease, the patient suddenly experiences generalized shivering (chills) followed by profuse sweating. This is the final battle between vital qi and pathogenic qi.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
The darkness before dawn. When you see the patient shivering, don't panic; this is the decisive moment. If after sweating the fever subsides and the pulse is calm, vital qi has won (great fortune); if after sweating there is restlessness and a rapid pulse, vital qi has collapsed (great misfortune).
Anchor fast decisions
A concept in Chinese warm-disease theory, referring to the turning point in the struggle between pathogenic qi and vital qi. The chills are due to vital qi gathering strength to resist the pathogen, intending to expel it; the subsequent profuse sweating is a sign that vital qi has overcome the pathogen, and the pathogen is expelled with the sweat. The pulse and mental state after sweating are key to determining the outcome: a calm pulse and cool body indicate a favorable course; restlessness and a rapid pulse indicate an adverse course.
