Semantic Web
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-28
CORE DEFINITION
The Semantic Web is a concept proposed by Tim Berners-Lee of the World Wide Web Consortium in 1998. Its core is to add semantics (metadata) that computers can understand to documents on the World Wide Web (such as HTML documents), thereby making the entire Internet a universal medium for information exchange. The Semantic Web extends the capabilities of the World Wide Web through the use of standards, markup languages, and related processing tools. However, the concept of the Semantic Web is actually based on many existing technologies and also relies on the later integration of text-and-markup and knowledge representation. The "Semantic" Web is composed of documents that are more effective, more broadly meaningful, and automatically aggregate and collect information than the more mature Internet search tools of today. Its most basic element is the semantic link.

Anchor fast decisions
Machines can understand the semantics of web content, and data flows seamlessly across applications, rather than being documents only for human reading. The core is the Resource Description Framework (RDF), ontologies, and linked data, evolving from "linking documents" to "linking data".
